What is the fluorescence of a diamond?
The fluorescence of a diamond is a luminous effect that some diamonds exhibit when exposed to ultraviolet light. They emit a visible light, usually blue.
If you want to know the degree of fluorescence of your diamond, you must go to a diamond dealer so that he can place your diamond under an ultraviolet lamp.
If your stone reacts to ultraviolet light by coloring, it means that it has fluorescence. If the diamond remains dark, it is not fluorescent.

This fluorescence comes from a reaction between the energy of the light and the atoms of the diamond to ultraviolet rays. How does fluorescence affect the price of diamonds?

Why buy a fluorescent diamond?
This is indeed a poorly understood subject matter, because it is poorly explained. The lack of interest in this type of diamond rather results from false beliefs, because in almost all cases, it is impossible to distinguish with the naked eye whether a diamond has fluorescence or not. In some cases, fluorescence can even enhance the color to the naked eye, thus increasing the beauty of the diamond.
Historically, diamonds with fluorescence were valued (prized), sold for up to 5% more than others and actively sought after by dealers.
A 1997 study conducted by the renowned Gemological Institute of America, GIA, based on more than 26,000 diamonds, showed that, in most cases, fluorescence has no impact on the visible appearance of a diamond. The origins of the diamond trade dates back to the 17th century with Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a French merchant and great traveler, who was the pioneer of trade between Europe and Asia, and more particularly with India. Born in Paris in 1605, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was first a passionate collector before becoming a diamond dealer. His father, a map dealer, belonged to the Protestant families of Antwerp, which were persecuted at the time. He fled the persecutions to France.
Tavernier excels in the diamond trade
Before entering the world of diamonds, Tavernier was a great collector of furniture, silks and pearls, which he sold in the greatest royal courts. During his numerous travels, he became increasingly better trained in the trade of watches, jewelry and precious stones. It should be noted that in the 17th century the use of watches was an aristocratic privilege. His noble clientele already earned him a certain distinction in the world of trading and attracted certain covetousness. To ensure his safety during his travels, he offered gifts to the most powerful people of the countries he crossed in order to obtain their protection in exchange. He got stones from India, had them mounted and set in France, and then sold them in Asia. Indeed, India, from the 8th century BC to the 18th century, was the only source of diamond extraction, especially with the Golconde mines.
The appearance of diamonds in art in the 17th century
During the 17th century, trade between Europe and Indians developed and gradually spread to all levels of the population. In 1668, King Louis XIV bought the entire magnificent cargo brought back by Tavernier during his sixth trip to India: precious objects, jewels, pearls and 1,083 diamonds for a total of 900,000 pounds. One incredible piece stood out from the rest: a large blue diamond of a remarkable color, “Le Bleu de France” or “Bleu de Tavernier”, which became the blue diamond of the French crown. It was Jean Pittan who had the merit of cutting this magnificent diamond at the request of Louis XIV who included it in the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece. It represents the largest blue diamond ever discovered to date.
A bestseller in heritage
At a certain age and at the end of his many journeys, Tavernier decided to publish the story of his adventures. “The Six Trips of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier” (Les Six voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier), published in 1676, is a best-seller which gathers at the same time stories, itinerary notes, customs and commercial rules which will guide and inform other merchants.

Who are the diamond manufacturers and Sightholders?
Diamond manufacturers are able to purchase rough diamonds directly from large mining groups such as De Beers, Alrosa or Rio Tinto, leaders in diamond mining and marketing. For example, the De Beers group, which has been producing diamonds since 1888, has manufacturing diamond merchants as customers, who are able to purchase rough diamonds from the group’s marketing department. De Beers’ customers, known as Sightholders, build up their inventory either through direct sales, which take place several times a year, or through auctions. Direct sales account for 90% of the group’s sales. At these sales, Sightholders are invited to inspect and select merchandise. The remaining 10% of sales are made through auctions offered to 950 registered buyers on a dedicated platform.
The Sightholders, which are among the largest diamond dealers, have direct access to diamonds that have just been extracted from the diamond mines. After acquiring all of their stones, the diamond manufacturers have them cut and polished in various cutting countries such as India, China, Thailand or Russia, and then transport their goods to their offices in the worldwide diamond exchanges.
Thus, the diamond supply chain follows precise rules, passing through different types of professionals along the way from their mining through commercialization to the individuals.
What is the role of wholesale diamantaires?
Wholesale diamantaires generally do not have the capacity or the means to purchase large quantities of rough diamonds directly from the major mining groups. Therefore, they are second only to the manufacturing diamantaires in the overall diamond production chain. They buy their merchandise at the exchanges from the manufacturing diamantaires or other wholesalers.
Who are the diamond brokers?
It is common to find many brokers in the diamond exchanges. They are independent commercial agents who work within the exchanges only by playing the role of intermediary between the various diamantaires, manufacturers and wholesalers. They receive a 1% commission on each sale wherein they participate.
What is the diamond supply chain?
The rough diamonds, purchased from the major mining groups and then polished on the initiative of the diamond manufacturers, are sent directly to the world’s diamond exchanges where trading is in full swing between manufacturers and wholesalers who sell their stock there. The diamond manufacturers also offer their merchandise directly to international dealers, who then resell it to jewelry manufacturers, and then to retailers and so on to the final consumer. How does one become a member of the Diamond Exchange?
Although access to the diamond exchange remains the prerogative of privileged diamantaire, it is not without reason. A tough selection process and highly selective criteria are a guarantee of quality and trust. To become a member, it is necessary to follow a precise curriculum and to comply with all the stipulated requirements. Firstly, only diamantaires with a long experience in the diamond business, either on their own, or for an employer, are eligible for this distinction. The applicant must have a clean criminal record and must undergo a rigorous examination with numerous documents to be provided, and must go through a series of interviews, at the end of which they are subjected to a lie detector test. The new candidate must be recommended by several experienced diamantaires, provide financial guarantors who are ready to commit themselves to him/her and, if necessary, to pay his/her debts. He/she must also be a personal guarantor of all his/her assets. It is easy to understand that after having successfully passed these different steps, one can boast of being a member of a diamond exchange.
